Moroccan Decorating

As I was so rubbish last week about posting and tomorrow is an early start followed by appointments  so I am being rather good and posting now.  A fire burns slowly in the hearth, Maud is running around flinging her ostrich in the air and at my feet and I’ve lazily spent the afternoon snuggled up on George Smith reading the papers– domestic bliss hey! Enough about me lets talk Morocco – saw Jamie Oliver’s programme on it last week and it brought back memories or that exciting culture where ancient traditions and craftsmanship have been around for yonks.

It’s an intoxicating style a blend of vibrant colours, low level seating and ornate accessoires. When ever I visit a trade fair there is always an ethnic hall whereby I am hypnotised by this style of design and often times find myself thinking about buying into this extravagant vibe. I love the low level daybeds in varying bright hues coupled with rugs of burnt orange, sunset reds and faded mauves. Below is an image that shouts Morocco very loudly from the roof tops and is super easy to pull off in you have a nook in need of a little revamp.  Perfect for summer lounging with a book and a glass of Prosecco  – or possibly mint tea? No Prosecco nothing beats it.

I love Moroccan style as well. There is a Taschen book called “Living in Morocco” that I want!! In India (total digression) the people are taught that vibrant colour is beautiful. I live in Canada and I hear on design shows that vibrant colour looks wonderful in a childs room, what a disservice to adults. Vibrant colour is so uplifting. Thanks for your posts.

    Hello Abigail,

A quick hello to say I find your blog really good and going to see your shop was high on my to-do list during my London visit recently. Your post on Moroccan stuff made me think of the amazing 3 Caravan shops (owned by Françoise Dorget here in Paris and not the same as the one in LOndon which is also lovely but a different style). You most probably know of them but ifnot they are really worth a visit especially Caravan Chambre near Bastille.
    Keep up the good work

    Dear Abigail,

It was so lovely to read this blog entry enthusing about Moroccan style! We loved genuine old Moroccan rugs – those gorgeous “rugs of burnt orange, sunset reds and faded mauves” – so much that we started to bring vintage pieces to the UK and now sell the best from a small collection. A recent development we’ve seen has been the huge amount of new copies that are now flooding the market. But there’s so many reasons to be passionate about authentically old pieces – the quality of the piece handmade for personal use, the worn yarn, the beautiful colour of the natural dyes – and hope that those who want the very best of Moroccan style will take time to hunt out truly original rugs and carpets that will light up their homes. It will be a lifelong love affair!
