Self Portrait

It appears we have a shortage of water so from April 5th hosepipes are banned and we are all being encouraged to share baths, not to leave the tap running whilst brushing teeth and not to wash the car. I can deal with not washing the car and I don’t leave the tap running whilst brushing teeth but the thought of spending 3 hours watering the garden with a watering can is a right old nightmare OR putting Maud and Mung’s in a bath together. Maud hates baths and will positively hate sharing one with her brother (she takes after me, not a good bath sharer) so there’s a problem. Mungo on the other hand will share a bath, bed, and food with anyone, he is a boy after all!

Problems problems and I thought we lived in a rainy country apparently not, Australia I read gets way more rain. Crazy! Anyway my plan to water the hell out of the garden until April 5 and for us all to have baths for hours on end so when it comes  to April 5 we will have I would say at least 3 weeks grace!!

Anyway we are here for interiors right not water problems of which I could drone on for hours. As I mention regularly the more risks you take when it comes to decorating the more amazing your place will look. Rough timber boards picked up at any reclamation joint cladding kitchen units for example (as soon below) really nail what I am talking about.

Its called thinking outside of the box. Sourcing bronze taps as opposed to the standard chrome or stainless for bathrooms, kitchens and loos is another cool idea. I picked up the cheapest tap for my little downstairs loo from a DIY store (B&Q in fact its gold OK not real gold but its so much softer than silver). Jenna Lyon’s old bathroom looks beyond amazing with bronze taps, and coupled with those dark walls is heavenly. Tripple Gold Star!

Easy peasy stuff hey, I will leave you with a quote from who knows where but I’ve scrawled it across my diary and it’s a bloody good one:

‘A house is a self-portrait, it has to reflect its inhabitants and they way they live’.

Amen to that

  1. Love this kitchen, my dream kitchen I would say. I wish people would be more imaginative with kitchens, they all seem to want to hide things away in neat cupboards rather than have it on display on shelves! Love your posts. And by the way do you refer to your dogs as kids or are you wonder women and have kids as well!

    • Sorry yes the dogs are the kids (sounds a little crazy I know) just don’t think of them as dogs for some weird reason

  2. With that quote in mind, and looking at the state of my hair, one could deduct that i have left the house in complete chaos this morning!

  3. Thanks for the bathroom and kitchen post. I noticed the bathroom has wooden floor which i was told is a no,no. How is this so?
Just to say thanks again for your personal advice and answering questions that i’ve asked over the past few weeks, i have just moved and i look at your blog every morning for inspiration. I plan on visiting your shop when you get the fireplaces in.

    • Hi Dev, don’t listen to rules supposedly water and wood are a good combo but I’ve lived with them in bathrooms and kitchens before and never a problem as long as you don’t leave water on the floor. Rules drive me crazy, break them. Fireplaces are in store in situ by the way

      • I read a long while ago in Domino magazine about sealing wooden furniture used for sink with marine sealant (?) or something that they use to protect wood parts of sailboats from rotting. This might be an idea for wood floor in a bathroom.

  4. I totally agree about the watering milarkey, I’ll be up til midnight with that darn watering can!!

I love that quote and so true, your home can look like a page out of a catalogue or it can tell a story about the person who lives there.

So in my bid for creating a unique look in my home, I’m off to get a vintage italian bar cart tomorrow that i tracked down on ebay and arrange on it my 50s style pitcher and glasses that I bid for at my first auction…hurrah to individuality!!

  5. Hi Abigail
Can you recommend a good carpenter in east London? I’m moving house and found pages I tore out of an old Elle Deco that had a picture of your house, with long wooden handles on the closets made of oak? Who made them for you? thanks, EC

    • Hi afraid I don’t know of any, the guys are use are working on a project up North. We actually made those handles ourselves all the details in my book, its super easy I promise.

  6. I repeat your Amen to the final quote!
And a home has to be a reprsentation of one’s life and memories!
It is not something that comes out of a showroom or decorating 101!

the water shortage in London may be something to do with a little problem I’ve heard people speak of……..climate change!!
Have fun in the bath with your pooches and I do love a brass tap!
    JWE xx
