Get Your House in Order, premiers tonight Channel 4 8pm

Big big big day today, the television programme I have been working on, Get Your House in Order airs tonight 8pm Channel 4. Each week Nick Allen (my co-presenter and I) go into people’s homes whose quality of life has been buried under mounds of possessions. Nick and I persuade them to part with their possessions and then Nick uses all his tricks in the trade (he is a super cool dealer of antiques and artifacts) to sell the stuff in order to give me the money to re-design their homes. In this first episode Nick and I get to visit Amie and Ali’s home where compulsive shopper Amie has something like 106 dresses, 142 handbags, more than 300 tops, 140 pairs of shoes and more.

Will Nick and I be able to get Amie and Ali to part with their possessions? Will Nick be able to sell said possessions in order to give me the money for a much needed re-design? And finally will Amie and Ali even like my design (some of the rooms are going very dark)!!! I shall leave you all in suspense until this evening. Hope you enjoy,  and a sneak peak of the re design for Amie and Ali’s pad which you may have seen in the advert C4 have been running recently.

  1. O I’m so excited, cannot wait to watch! But, slight problem,
I’m not based in the UK. Is there any way I can watch it afterwards, on the internet??
btw, the pad looks AH MAH ZING!
    happy thursday! x

      • He Abigali,

Good job done, looks fab. Love the colours used and furniture is right up my street. I work for an architect and nice to a finished product that’s not a typical interior designed look. I am in the proces of totaly renovating my house and very interesed in useing a similar fire place as you used in the bedroom , are you able to tell me where it is from?
        Cheers
        Jordan

    • Try using 1.channel, they have been putting lots of Channel 4 programs on, though I don’t know if this is because I am based in the UK. Oh! Thursday night tv set to be good again……. Thanks Abigail. xx

  2. I cannot WAIT to see this! First of all, I love your interiors, and second of all, I love shows about hoarders! I am already addicted to the American programme ‘Hoarders’ but your show is bringing two of my favouritie things together: tidying up, and making things beautiful. Hurray :)

  3. I am very excited tooo!!!
And you can probably watch again using 4OD (4 on demand, you can downoad the app and watch on Ipad etc)

  4. I will at that very moment be knee-deep in an Ebay battle for a retro coat stand but even that won’t prevent me from watching this!! So excited for this and huge congratulations Abigail.

  5. Have you used dark paint on the ceilings in your house or have you painted some white? I’m sure your series will be a great success!

  6. Please please can you tell me how you apply to get your help in a series? Im 37 with 3 kids and some have said im a hoarder, and i hate my home. I try so hard to get it in order but it never works out. I am desperate for help, so i can enjoy my home with my kids, and be happy for once.

  7. I am really looking forward to this! My only worry is that now so many other people will be exposed to your ideas, they too will embrace the dark side and my decor ideas (based on your ideas!) will not look so unique ;-( Anyway Good luck with it! You have revolutionised my thinking so no doubt you will do so with many others!

    • I wasn’t informed Amie was a veggie, it certainly wasn’t intentional. Rugs are fundamental in changing spaces.

    • there is no need to be mean and rude , abi didnt know she was a vegetarian and anyway after that girl had all those shoes, bags and belts how do you know some of them werent made of leather or suede!!!!!

  8. As expected, the programme was excellent. Well done! I noticed that you used a tall orange lamp shade similar to the one you have in your own home. Would you let me know where I can purchase similar please? I’ve already looked on the suppliers list from the show (!) but can’t find it on any of the websites
    Thanks

    • Thanks Alice the lamp was a vintage find but lots of them abound at the major antiques fairs like Newark and Ardingly

  9. Just watched your programme. It was really great, well done. i cannot believe how much stuff Amy had…..i am so going to look angelic to my husband now, almost saint like!
I loved what you did with rooms. I have but a couple questions….well I have loads but will hold back!
First, what colour did you paint the study and bedroom?
Second, where do you order the fireplace from?
And finally, I loved your grey/ yellow jumper- if not too cheeky, where is that from?
    Looking forward to next week.

    • Thank you, fireplace comes from the store, paint for the bedroom Designers Guild and its called pebble, the study is Hague Blue by Farrow and Ball and the jumper is from Selfridges.

  10. Great first episode Abigail! Kids story cut short, wine opened. Could not believe how much stuff she had, saint of a man for putting up with her! Of course the finished results did not disappoint, the white did nothing for the room, it could so take dark with its size & low ceilings. So warm, inviting, sexy & fun in the end. Roll on episode 2!!! Congratulations to you.

  11. Don;t be sorry its your opinion and you are entitled to it. What I hope is that you interior pushes boundaries and makes you happy, that is what is design is all about. You walk through the door and your spirits are instantly raised, feel that and you’ve nailed it.

  12. Loved the show! The end result was fabulous. I too love fashion but would gladly have traded the hoard in for a house as amazing! Painting the shoes was a great idea! What colour paint did you use in the bedroom?

  13. We just watched the programme and loved the print used in his study. It was sort of a negative/coloured effect city street scene. Where is that from?

  14. Loved the show! Loved the bedroom with the lip print on the wall. I loved it all really! Where did you get the statue of what looks like a fat bellied wolf on your fireplace. Hilarious looking and fantastic!!!

  15. Hi Abigail, and a huge congrats on your programme!! I have been counting down the days with great excitement. Would like to say it didnt disappoint in the least. I’ve only recently come accross your work, and have to say one has been hooked ever since. I just absolutelylove your style so much as I would like to come on one of your courses it would be a pleasure to meet you as well. Keep up your good work.

  16. I live in San Francisco. Soooo wish I could have watched it. As expected, it sounds like It was great. Congrats. I love your style. You inspire me all the time. Yes, let us know if show is available online.

  17. I am Brazilian and I live in Barcelona.
    I love your blog!
How do would to know if there is a link to watch your channel 4 online?

    xxx

  18. Great programme, bit different to other make over shows, very enjoyable! Had a reminder to watch it in my calendar since you first mentioned it! Still havent painted our coffee table – you suggested Charlottes Lock as a colour but have purchased the tester pot so maybe this weekend….

  19. Angie – I’m no expert but I am an ex-sentimental hoarder. I started reading various blogs on the subject. Unclutterer is a good one. There are many others. Search on minimalism also – that will help. It took a while for my mindset to change, but slowly it has. I no longer hoard, but it was a gradual process. I didn’t realise what a detrimental effect keeping all the crap was having on me. There’s also a book called ‘Buried in Treasures’ – which includes questions to help you identify why/what you are hoarding. Jo

  20. Havent watched the show yet but am saving it up till tonight having recorded it yesterday. Can’t wait to watch it (with glass of wine of course). I was upset for you with the two negative comments as I think if you havent anything positive to say, dont say it at all.
Thankfully the positives far outweigh the negatives, Abigail.

  21. Hi Abigail, loved the show. Please could you tell me where the £80 pic in the blue office was from? Have to have it!!

    Thanks emma

  22. Yeah loved the show, cant wait for the next instalment, couldnt believe she was trying to buy stuff back from her own sale…so funny. I loved how you accessorised the living room with the various pops of colour.

  23. Loved the program! a real inspiration to try new decor ideas on our own home, can’t wait to watch next weeks show. I thought the fireplace was beautiful and would love one, if you ship to Ireland!

  24. Hi
i loved your makeover of the Living room especially the colour on the walls. could you tell me what paint was used please? Also, there were a couple of rooms featured to show how a fireplace can bring a room together, and above the white one there was a fabulous L O V E picture in pinks and blues. I would love to own this. Can you tell me where I can get this?

    • The paint in the living room was by Farrow and Ball could downpipe, not sure where the Love print came from, Nelly Duff might do it have a look at them

  25. Hi Abigail,
Watched the programme and loved what you did to the house. I am interested in finding a similar red chair to the one that you got in the series – i seem to recall you mentioning it was around the £150 mark. Can you let me know where I can find one at that price please?
    Many Thanks

  26. Hi Abigail,
I was wondering if there was going to be another series, as i would be interested in taking part, as i have been told i have a hoarding problem, and i must say i think that i probably do. by the way i really enjoyed the show.

    thanks barry

  27. Hi I think ur makeovers r fab!!!! I live in Leicester and really want to sort out my garage which is full of clothes and household items! There is just too much to get rid of on eBay or at car boots!! On the show they have mentioned agents that will take a cut and sell stuff for u on eBay and also clothes wholesalers that will buy stuff in bulk and sell off to Market traders and dress agencies etc. How can I find the contact details for these in the Leicester area? Many thanks, fab programme!! :-)

  28. Have just watched episode 3 with Sylvia, (conservatory makeover) I really love the greeny blue you used on walls and wooden unit, and the coffee colour in the other adjoining room, could you please tell me what colour paints they were, i’m guessing farrow and ball and have their paint chart in my hand trying to fathom out which ones it may have been!

  29. Hi Abigail,
I love your style. Iam moving to a new house soon and Im thinking of going dark, what colour is the paint in your room the one thats featured in the programme I love it. I was thinking of going a darkish grey on the walls so what colour sofa would you recommend I aready have a grey-green velvet chair and want something different from that but Iam overthinking it and can’t come to decision, Thanks Kelly

    • The colour is down pipe by Farrow and Ball, in terms of sofa I would go caramel or if you wanted a dash of colour maybe an inky blue. if you look at theselby.com and type in my name some pics will come up with downpipe walls and various sofas at my home. Might give you some inspiration on colours.

  30. Hi
I watched the conservatory make over and I was really impressed. I have been trying to find the right grey for my kitchen for ages and I have seen the down pipe grey before and liked it. Could you inform me of the name of the lighter grey (on the wall with the buterfiles that was used in the second area – kids reading section), as I really liked the combination of the two.
Thanks in advance, looking forward to the next show. Vicky

    • Down pipe in the dining area and the kids/butterfly area dusted moss (No 1) by Dulux. Go for No 1 as the other dusted moss hues are too pale I find in comparison.

  31. Hi Abigail, loving the show, I have seen some of your work before and find you a total inspiration! I am an aspiring Interior Designer myself and am currently re-doing a few rooms in our flat before we sell. I was wondering if I could pick your brain on something? Most of my rooms are either grey or white and have matching skirtings and door-frames, however I have just used a hot chocolate colour in one room (it is surprisingly elegant) and can’t decide whether to leave the woodwork white as it does pop or go for a matching eggshell/satinwood?

Also do you know of an oil-based paint for woodwork that is completely matt as the above tend to have a slight sheen?

I realise this isn’t an advice column so if you can’t reply I totally understand.

    Many thanks,
    Claire

    • Personally I would paint everything the same colour as I don’t think woodwork should get any sort of attention, the accessories and whats in the room should do that. But again its a totally personal opinion. Also if you paint everything out the same colour your walls will feel way taller rather than cutting them off with white woodwork. Re oil based I’m not the best person to ask I am afraid since many of the paint companies I use have gone eco friendly and now everything is water based. Not as hard wearing and the finish isn’t as good but hey.

  32. hi Abigail, just doing our place to sell big, but sort of dark in places, basement flat in South Ken, could you work your magic on it if you have time for another project this month?
    Toby

    • Hi Toby, thanks for your email, regrettably will have to decline, diary is beyond crazy right now. Apologises though

  33. I’m really looking forward to one of your workshops I have planned with my friend Keara. A bit of an odd request really on the 2nd episode you made over a conservatory, which are pretty difficult at the best of times, but you used a fabulous house plant…do you by any chance know the name of it!
Love the end results you achieve each week.

    • Its a ficus and I got it from Covent Garden flower market there is a stand there that just specilises in house plants, was around £150ish pounds if I recall. See you soon

  34. hi abegail, in your last programme with joy from bexhill, i was very good friends with her daughter for a long time, we lost touch, moved etc, i have been trying to track nik down, then i saw her mum on tv.. would you be able to pass on my message and details for me please.. many thanks.. tanya..

  35. Hi Abigail, have been watching your show tonight. I struggle all the time with O.C.D. and hoarding. I doubt I would have anything of much monetary value. My life thus far has been blighted by my difficulties. Would you know of any help available to me. I need to overcome the need to hold onto things for fear of them ending in a landfill. I battle perfectionism and procrastination constantly. Awaiting your reply.
    Thank you.
    Jackie.

    • Hi Jackie, I would google de-cluttering organisations in your local area they should be able to help you out. We took very little to landfill in the show, things were recycled, given to charity and reworked so they don’t be all means have to go to landfill. I wish you the very best of luck, you’re half way there I would say facing up to the problem and wanting to do something about it, is the hardest part but if you can push forward its the most rewarding. x

  36. Hi Abigail in one one of the episodes there was a lovely children’s sofa, where was it from please? Really enjoying the programs and love your work!

  37. Great goods from you, man. I have understand your stuff previous to and you are just too fantastic. I really like what you’ve acquired here, certainly like what you’re saying and the way in which you say it. You make it enjoyable and you still take care of to keep it wise. I can’t wait to read far more from you. This is actually a great web site.

  38. Hi :)
Looking at the first photo on the page i want to find a similar paint scheme for my loft bedroom (very small room)
i fancy a pebble style colour and jazz it up with bright furniture so im just after any names of decent paint colours you would reccomend?

    Thanks xx
