Have to type doubly fast this morning as its a crazy day with much to do, coupled with the fact that the shower’s busted and the Merc has completely broken down, so baths and public transport are adding to the hassle factor. Never mind that lets talk about my favourite subject pattern and texture. They are the herbs and spices of the decorating world, they take a space from drab to fab in a nano second.
I’ve become a little obsessed with rugs – (fabulous for adding both texture and pattern). When I should be spending money on clothes (since I have none) into my radar pops a totally cool rug and then there is no fight. Crazy, I used to be so into clothes and excited by clothes and now I’m just not, they don’t do it for me. Paint, rugs, cool art, furniture makes my heart skip a beat not clothes. Need to address the balance I guess but something in me has shifted, but hey I’m digressing back to rugs. Rugs are so fabulous for adding texture particularly when you layer like this.
As I say a zillion times the more layers you add the more interest you create.
Next up pattern, pattern adds intrigue and is a vital component of any interior. Wallpaper is great for adding pattern, particularly the kind you make up yourself like plonking tear sheets on a wall, again as seen below. Love this idea in home offices or little nooks around the house. Although zillions of images have been used it doesn’t feel crazy as the colour palette is restricted and it’s so easy to do.
OK gotta fly – have a great day

Thanks for the post I look forward to it popping into my inbox each day!
I totally agree on the texture and rugs front and am desperately in need of rugs (not too pricey) to lift my dining room of downpipe walls, oak flooring & wooden table. Any suggestions?
Also I love the colour of your green/blue gloss round table, would you mind sharing the colour?
Thanks for the inspiration!
Sarah
Rug sources that are fab are Maroc Tribal, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Laurssi, auction houses and flea markets. I’ve brought recently 3 all from either auctions or fleas for a song and they look fab. The paint colour on my table was by Zoffany but they have discontinued the colour, however the Paint Library have a colour called Teal which is literally the same. x
Hi Abigail., totally loving your post, as always, But these days more than rugs I am totally obsessed with a new couch I need to get, now that I see a chester in one of the pics, Could I kindly ask you for your advise? I am thinking a black chester or even a hoffman kubus, for which I cannot find any feedbacks anywhere.. Have you had a chance to try one? I need to pair my new sofa with a rather recent buy, a kivik chase from ikea… I know one has nothing to do with the other, I am not worried about it since I dont like the ” everything matches” look and always heard from you it is not the most appropiate to add interest, But do you think they would match in their different looks? thanks so much for your daily inspiration!
Totally think you can partner the two, am a big fab of chesterfields particularly when layered with cushions for me anyways prefer them to the hoffman they feel a little less ta da if that makes any sense. Paring modern with tradition looks fab and have no doubt it will work x
That picture with the green sofa and white floor is my favourite! I dont know exactly why, but everything in it is just right. Like your blog, thanks!
Your post this morning made me laugh. I hardly buy clothes these days too, as I much prefer to buy something for the home. I just can’t help it, every time I go out, I come back with something I can sit and look at, not put on! I’m glad it’s not just me
Thanks Abigail x
That second room is like a walk in the garden! Fabulous collating of tear sheets with a very fine eye for colour. Not sure if there is a garden just outside the window of this room, but it hardly matters, for this is so refreshing. And yes, what a great pattern it all makes. Alive but restful.
Oh Abigail how I laughed ‘obsessed with rugs!’ can so relate to that have been hankering over a felted multicoloured ball one for 3 years. After a ridiculously expensive one i was given was ruined by red wine white wine salt make over! Also must stop googling velvet chesterfields! Clothes used to do it for me – but now much prefer the home magazine section! I was starting to get worried as that’s all I google – you’ve made me feel normal! Ps on the coffee front used to have excellent Italian milk frother ( Teflon) Bialetti? Now that’s given up the Ghost moved to Pyrex Bodum. Keep up the inspiring stuff x
