Flower Power

Morning, I should be on my way to Bikram yoga right now but I’ve missed the slot so contemplating going for a later class. Not particularly looking forward to it since I’m much more of a pound the treadmill at full speed kind of gal but regrettably my hip can no longer take that sort of exercise so this is my new plan. Tried Pilates didn’t exactly do it for me but then I gave it no chance (one class) got bored, wanted to sweat and run and all that kind of stuff, but hoping Bikram with the heat might at least make me feel I’m working out even though I am stiff as a board and will probably get beyond frustrated at not being able to bend into any sort of position.

Enough about my exercise regime or lack of it today I thought we would yabber a bit about flowers. As you all know I am the hugest fan, real, fake you name it of the transformative powers a bunch of blooms has,  its phenomenal. Gem (my sister) and a trained florist for over 15 years gives a fab presentation in the Design School on some cool tips for flowers. Like interiors its all about thinking outside of the box, so we are big fans of housing flowers in alternate vessels, t -light holders, beakers, bowls, kitcheny kind of things as well as standard vases. Top top top tip don’t let the stems show, let the blooms just topple over the vessel a la below looks far more sophisticated that way, and keep the colour palette restricted. I tend to opt for bunches of one type of thing, although Gem has made me up two amazing bunches of mixed county esq faux blooms  and colours which I adore.

One of them being this fabulous bunch which now presides on the mantle piece in the school

This is one of them. How amazing do these faux flowers look , they have completely enlivened the mantle piece.

Neither Gem or I are lovers of tropical flowers and are much more into big blousy blooms I guess English countryside  varieties. Growing up there were always bunches of flowers on the table from my parents garden, forget me nots in the spring, peonies and sweet peas later on so its kind of stuck with us and the flowers we buy very much reflect this. But listen its totally personal if you love the tropical stuff go for it just think a little outside the box when it comes to containers:

Beautiful for bulbs this green container as is this ad hoc collection of bottles, wine, oil and  perfume for housing single blooms below.

Happy Wednesday

  1. i am an exercise junkie as much as interiors…and like you want my heartbeat up with exercise or when i see an amazing styled room! So after trying every type of exercise of the last 20 or so years, i discovered bikram 6mths ago and love it, so does my body. Hated the first 5 classes but stuck with it (i had purchased a month of unlimited classes) well i haven’t looked back, feel stronger, walk taller more flexible and as a bonus a lot more calmer…so go for it Abigal! xx

    • Shall listen to you and go for it. Hated the first class couldn’t do any of the positions and felt sick alot, but shall go tomorrow for the early session and then its done and I don’t have to think about it.

  2. i love your flowers arrangement but did not understood to hide the stocks, sorry being french i need sometimes some precisions thank you

    • I meant hide the stems of the flowers so all you see toppling over the top of the vase are the flower heads and not their actual stems unless of course its a woody type flower like lilac or blossom – but roses, hydrangea, peonies all those sort of fat headed flowers look more sophisticated when you only see their heads x

  3. Dear Abigail,

You would think I’m completely clueless when it comes to technology (which I’m not!) but I can’t seem to find your contact email address anywhere. I’m a fashion and lifestyle journalism student and I would like to ask you a few questions about your blog if that’s ok?

    Let me know,

    Jade

  4. hi abigail
do you put flowers in your bedroom? i need inspiration when it comes to my room i have just bought pink paint but my husband is a little unsure,do i do the full room or one large wall where my bed is,i have just recieved my new F&B colour chart love London Clay which i know you have used.when can we see see some piccies to give me some idea would you go pink? its not a colour i would normally go for but in one of my living etc somebody did a full house and it did look amazing but i am a white and grey girl

    • I will take some pics and yes I do have flowers in the bedroom a mixture of real on my desk and faux everywhere else. So huge jugs of faux hydrangea’s, and berries as well as big vessels containing blossom by the side of the bed. In terms of paint colour I am the wrong person to ask about pink since its a colour that I am not that keen on. Please don’t let that stop you if you love it try it, its paint and you can easily paint over it if you hate. Where possibly also try and do the whole room in the same colour – the one feature wall thing to me with paint at least doesn’t work. London Clay is beautiful but you need lots of lighting along with stuff to make it look fab but I adore it. Hope that helps

  5. Enjoy Bikram! It is one of the most mentally challenging forms of exercise I have ever done……Be well hydrated before you go…..Btw, the flowers are beyond stunnning.

  6. Hi Abigail,
The bouquet is gorgeous. I bought some more flowers from your beautiful shop yesterday. I was a bit gutted Gem wasn’t there as she always has amazing advice on the choices I make. And how to arrange them, She’s Brilliant. Instead I grabbed a few gelda snowballs and hydrangeas..? all the same colour. Think they will work. I’m sure I’ll be back for more either way..

    • Gem doesn’t work in the store any more but you can always ask the guys if you want her to put something together for you. Like your choice am positive they will work x
