Yesterday a long one I might add (got to my desk at 6 finished at around 8) I redesigned my ground floor in my head. Whilst trying to figure out what to put in the new store and writing the new classes for New York and Australia and getting carried away talking about interiors that take it to the next level I realised that one of the rooms on my ground floor, the living roomy bit of the studio was really below par. You will say I am sure that I am being exceedingly fussy, possibly I am a bit but there must be a reason I never really hang out here, see here below (i’ve pinched the rug and now taken it to the bedroom which is one of the reasons I’m thinking that its not working)
Sofa not squishy enough, no rug, lighting needs ramping up to another level that sort of thing. What’s the point you may ask with today’s yabberings well it’s really to say that a room is never really finished. It kind of keeps evolving, it changes direction as I change direction. I don’t really need a second sofa I figured out yesterday, the one I have on the lower ground floor knocks all other sofas out of the park its soooo supremely comfortable and this chesterfield up here isn’t, supremely comfortable that is. What I need are a couple of loungy chairs around the fireplace (for M&M) a circular coffee table, a big slubby rug and a second desk seeing how my current desk is too small for the projects that are going on and piles are getting larger around the floor. So that is my plan, I am also painting the room dark chocolate I think, (although might be black not sure) if anyone knows any good dark brown paint do let me know – I’ve tried Farrow and Ball but not a lover of their browns regrettably, Zoffany do a lovely brown (or so it seems on the swatch card so will be checking that one out).
So you never really finish, rooms just keep evolving, growing up, getting grandeur (in my case) with a bit more edge I think – its that mingling of glamour with a bit of rock n roll that I am particularly attracted too. I am sure if I had gone down a rustic route with the new store I would be putting some distressed furniture in my studio coupled with hay bales possibly? Who knows where this room will lead, but that I reckon is the exciting part!
It’s raining AGAIN, I need a warm comforting muffin from Violets along with a flat white, and the Guardian and a big cardy to wrap up in. M&M are off to school as I am in meetings all day and I worry about them going on a day like this, about them getting wet with no fire or bed to snuggle up on. I know its nuts their dogs not kids (except I tend not to think of them more as kids than dogs) and they do have heated beds in school for when they are having quiet times (if they ever have quiet times that is)!
Enough from me, gotta run late already

The room looks so homely, but I get the chesterfield and comfy, doesn’t matter how old they are you still don’t sink in when you sit on them.you always feel you have to sit up straight.
Dark brown would look yummy,London clay is the darkest brown ive seen, but obviously you already no that, surprised you haven’t designed your own paint range for farrow and ball (ha ha)
Oh no hope I haven’t put another idea in your head. Have a good day
Would love to do a paint range with F&B except they don’t colaberate with designers – but shall keep you posted possibly something in the pipeline
I have a gorgeous deep brown feature wall in my lounge i keep thinking its so nice i may do all walls. Cant think of name off the top of my head but i know it was dulux. I now thanks to you have a grey hall and a teal study area. I may have to sell my flat due to financial reasons next year so trying to resist not darkening all
Shall check it out thank you
Little Greene do a Purple Chocolate and Chocolate Colour, they are deep, dark brown, almost black x
Cool thank you
Not a fan of F&B browns? Surely you can’t have gone off London Clay? Which reminds me, how did the bedroom turn out?
No I love London Clay its not brown enough though for this room Im thinking peat, dark dark chocolate kind of hues
Abigail two things, thank you so much for the blog on Fellah hotel, so inspired and fed up with the weather too that I have booked in for 9 night yay!!! So excited and thank you as always for sharing it looks so gorgeous….. will let you know how it is in real life, are you going? Marston and Langinger do some very lovely sludgy peaty hues Mole Brown, Peat or Roman Bronze (my fave) are all lovely earthy and slightly grey less browny red than London Clay…….
Thanks for the paint tips shall look into asap, also am so so jealous, it looks so amazing that hotel I haven’t been but am desperate to spend a weekend there chilling out. Do let me know how it is x
Zophany paints are to die for (my downstairs hall is chocolate and I have a living room in black). I’m trying Victorian Purple next. Autentico have wonderful dark colours which I mainly use for painting furniture but they have chalk, velvet and vintage finishes for walls and ceilings.
Thank you x
Hi Abigail, Flamant paint might be an option for you. They have a really dark and beautiful chocolate-colored paint. http://www.flamant.com/flamant/products
Best regards from Munich
Olaf
I totally understand where you are coming from with regards to the Farrow and Ball range. Was in a similar situation a few months ago and have since discovered Mylands of London – highly recommend checking out their range, just flicking through the chart at my desk, can spot at least three which would work for you!..All the best!

Definitely agree about the round coffee tables at the moment – all i know right now is that i want a revolving one! Desperately trying to get hold of a Mastercraft 70s brass rotating one at the moment -just got outbid for one on ebay -gutted! Still, thats the dream…
Hi Abigail, do you have Porters Paint in the UK? They do incredible sludgy darks and their eggshell finish is unbelievable. Can’t specify a brown but their Aniseed (black) is SO good. By the way I am one of Megan’s teachers at The School, really looking forward to having you there! Tamara
No but I know exactly the paints you mean as I went into their showroom when I was last in Sydney, heavenly. Thank you also about your kind words am so looking forward to coming across the The School
hi abigail
uncannily so on the same wavelength as you – just wish I had half your energy! Maybe I should swop my twenty daily cups of builders tea for coffee ,Try purple brown from the heritage range from the little greene paint company for a dark brown, booked your masterclass for September- can’t wait. kind regards, ann
Thank you shall have a look and see you in September x
Tthe brown used by Ilse Crawford in the children’s sitting room in Dinder House is rich and warm. Not sure from where though, sorry
Its a beautiful brown you are right there
I know what you mean. Husband reckons our house is like the Fourth Bridge! I do tend to get bored and go off things so need to change stuff every now and again.
I am with you on the f&b browns, they lack that real depth and richness. Have you tried Little Greene? Purple brown and chocolate colour look good!
Bring on the evolution! Sarah
Will certainly check out Little Greene a few people have suggested so will look into thanks
I loved this room when I attended one of your masterclasses last year and what your suggesting sounds gorgeous. I’d be really interested to hear where you’re going to start sourcing everything and what colours you are going to do with the brown.
Will keep you posted
this is actually one of my all time favourites of your rooms… it photographs so beautifully too! but i understand sometimes a gal just needs a change… looking forward to seeing the revamp!
Thanks x
Hi Abigail, I am loving your place. Sorry this question has nothing to do with this post. I wanted to know where to get one of those hanging figures with the huge feet. I saw it on your wall in a magazine and gotta have it. Thx Georgia
Its actually from the store Georgia we don’t put them online as they seem to always break when we send out but if you email the guys contact@atelierbypost.com they can put one by if you wanted to collect. There are two types the one I have is with the fatish legs the other has long skinny legs. Not sure how many are in stock but the guys will tell you
Totally get what you are saying about constantly evolving spaces . . . I have a similar issue with my sofa – too square, too upright, not nor low deep enough. I was talked into it by an interior designer (?!) against my instincts. Let that be a lesson to me! It was quite pricey and I justified it that I’d have it for a life-time. That was one year ago!!! But it’s just not right and I can’t justify getting rid of it . . . actually, I could ‘cos if it aint right it aint right, but my hubbie loves it. Would love a Graham and Green sofa but they don’t supply Australia, but thinking that this one http://www.ozdesignfurniture.com.au/coco-2
might be a good substitute. But can I really ditch the sofa after a year???? What to do?
Your new choice looks super comfortable. Maybe you could sell on your existing sofa and then it wouldn’t feel so bad getting right of it. I once had a B&B sofa that cost the earth but just wasn’t comfy and had to make the very same decision you’re about to make. All I can advise is that sofa’s are one those investment pieces that if you get it right lasts a lifetime. I replaced my b&b with a george smith and I’ve had it 12 years it will stay with us forever its sooo comfy.
I recently painted my kitchen Tanner’s Brown from F&B and love how it turned out, sludgy and rich and almost black. Possibly worth a second look…?
Shall indeed have a second look
Hi Abigail, I love your place. Just breathtaking.
Thank you most kind
Hi Abigail I’ve decorated my hall in little Greene chocolate colour it’s a beautiful rich brown with a wonderful depth to it,I tried farrow & ball tanners brown it was a toss up between the two but preferred the deeper chocolate colour it’s gorgeous and goes on like a dream x
Cool thank you will certainly check it out x
All the way from Australia. A fabulous brown/black/grey colour is Cumberland from Wattyl . Really yummy in a gloss finish!
Thank you
