Mirrors are one of the easiest tools in the decorating box when it comes to transforming rooms. They expand horizons, add intrigue and give spaces an instant polish. You can plonk in a dark corner and they will illuminate, you can rest against a mantle and they will add elegance, you can super size as I do and they will add drama. I tend to look at them almost as a work of art and with so many choices out there its super easy to add a different vibe to almost every room, should you so wish.
You could go down a faux-tortoiseshell route, glam, quite gentlemany yet cool as seen below.
Or you could cluster a group of convex on a wall, also super sweet (forgive the decor though image from US Elle Decor, surprise, surprise)!
Or you could go the whole hog and create a wall of mirrors with mercury glass panels (image from same magazine)
My point is that mirrors are handy little helpers , helping us make spaces feel grandeur, quirkier, cooler than they really are, whether you cluster together or go stand alone as I do, they make every room feel better.

Mirrors are the first thing I look for to transform a room. I rent my house out for filming and every time the film crew comes round (usually once a year) they take down all my huge mirrors so the crew aren’t inadvertently caught on camera. No matter how beautifully the set designers dress the house the space seems half the size and much less dramatic without the magical iluusory space and light created by placing a large mirror in an unexpected place and then crowding it with lights and plants or a favourite chandelier.
Like the symmetry in the second image and how the mirrors draw the eye to the bed, very alluring!
I love mirrors! For me they need to be dramatic and really make an impact..
Abigail, you rarely talk about windows yet they are surely quite important and the paint colours we choose for them must be sympathetic? I have shutters but I am getting the impression you dont like curtains or blinds? Your thoughts please.
YOu’re right I rarely do. I have shutters also and simple blinds in the bedroom. The problem with me and curtains is when I worked in the States I had to specif tones of chintz numbers, frou frou and god knows what else, but I am coming round to the idea of having them in the bedroom. Simple velvet ones
