Mood boards

In the Design School I talk about the benefits of creating a mood board. Too designer ish I here you cry, who has the time? Yes its a tad designer ish but find time I say, get up early, go to bed late, do it on the weekend, or on the tube, bus, helicopter (?) on the way to work! The reason, if you are all at sea at which direction you want your interior to take, or in a conundrum with colour, lighting or anything else it totally focuses the mind. The great thing about mood boarding a room is that at this stage you can be as brave and off radar as you possibly dare – its all up for grabs nothing is implemented yet, its just you, head honcho designer referencing a load of images you love and collating them to find some sort of theme. You don’t need to stick them on foam core or even print them off you can create boards on your computer  by referencing on line mags, blogs, pinterest all good sources for  images.

These guys have created a sweet little installation on their walls from a collection of images – fab for an office I have to say  and the great thing about it it focuses the mind. I mood board internally by that I mean when I’m working on a scheme images float into my brain of colours, textiles, furnishings I’ve done it so long that my mind is one big reference library of sources that I constantly pull on and rely on.

Lesson over, have a good Thursday

Nice idea… I agree that it needs time, but it’s worth doing … I used to collect old magazines and review them from time to time, and I certainly have few favorite photos there… I will use them for my board for sure

    Hi abigail
A late question to the mood board: what do you think about having one on a wall between kitchen and dining table? We have a nice size empty wall there and we would like to do something creative thinking of a magnetic Black board where all Family members could pin, write or paint what they like. One Thing to know – kitchen-, dining- and livingroom is a big open room…
    Tranks for your advice!

      Hi Larissa,
Personally I wouldn’t if it was like a huge wall as lots of small things pinned to could like a bit messy but its a personal opinion. If the wall wasn’t that big then I would certainly do it and again it depends on the vibe you are going for. Because its so near the dining table with friends etc coming over to diner I would do something like maybe paper it in a cool print to give it more of a sophisticated feel but the thing with decorating is its personal and if you are happy to have lots of stuff from the family on the wall go for it.

        Hi Abigail
Tanks so much for your reply. I was thinking about that too – having Lots of Family stuff in the center of the main room in the appartement. I don’t want to push it but one last question on that: what do you think about something as described above in the hallway? Thanks so much again. I love your blog and your style!

      • abigailahern says:

Sorry Larissa can you send me the question or link again can’t quite see what is described above as you say, and have the craziest day so haven’t got the time to trawl thru the site but if you send me the question again I will do my best to answer.
