Creating a luxurious interior

I flit all the time between styles like boho, rustic and glam and I try (not always successfully) to blend all three styles into my interior. One style I am perhaps leaning towards the most (and maybe its an age thing and I’m getting more grown up) is glamorous interiors. The kind that feel luxurious the moment you open the door and sort of wrap you up in the squishiest of blankets.  But how to achieve?  Well it’s not hard when you break it down. First up wallpaper, back in vogue big time the choices out there are enormous which is great for us consumers, and one of the easiest ways to inject glamour into your walls particularly if say you don’t have the hugest art collection. I am dithering about papering our stairwell and am playing around with some designs I’m considering putting into production. I reckon we should consider wallpapering hallways way more than we do – its unexpected and it makes the greatest statement and if I’m honest I have never truly loved our hallway, its OK but niggles away at me, so thinking wallpaper is the way to go!

Texture is another good component when thinking about glamour, super expensive looking velvets, cashmere’s, silks (don’t panic on price you can often times pick these up for a song on eBay or markets) .I’ve many a time turned an old pair of velvet curtains into great big cushions – beautiful.

Can I perhaps also interest you in a little bit of animal print as seen below from Lonny’s latest issue – cover anything in it and it immediately ups the glam ratings. I personally wouldn’t over do it; one stool or small chair is all you need. Mirrors are also great, you can go gilded and trad again like below but you can also go modern. Last year I found the most amazing mirrors on earth for the store, however the supplier has had production problems so it turns out I’ve been waiting over 6 months but they promise me end of February. Imagine super sized, round with a simple gold band (grabbing one – no two for home) don’t tell anyone otherwise it will cause the hugest arguments!

Flowers as we all know add a beautiful glamorous touch, as does anything gold, which I touched upon the other day. You don’t need a grand house or apartment to pull off the luxurious vibe; the interior above believe it or not is a rental in NYC. Which goes to illustrate my point about layers, the more layers you add the cooler your pad but you all know that right I’ve said it a trillion times already.

Have a lovely weekend – not totally sure what we are up too, other than breakfast at Borough with the kids because Monmouth allow dogs (yay hay). The only trouble being a Jack Russell (who has been going for some time) arrives at exactly the same time as us and is none to happy about our two. I get it he though he had Monmouth to himself and then 2 new kids on the block turn up, barking at him and creating a right old din. For some reason Maud has the hugest problem with Jack Russell’s not sure why, she won’t talk to me about it which does not help. Oh and back later with the flash sale, as its the end of the week and its the last one I will make it good.

It’s a terrior thing! Nervous, unpredictable, tenacious…GORGEOUS! Would like to see Ted in the mix :)
From your influence I can see my interior moving across to the glam. I inherited a lovely star, gilded clock last year from a very special and inspiring lady. Also a gold tea and coffee set. She was ahead of her time in so many ways, a bank manager in the 60s. They are not of any major monetory value, but speak volumes about her and have a certain sparkle wherever they are.
Have a lovely weekend, I may take a trip to Cardiff to view a painting I have been admiring online for several weeks. X

Hi Abigail Happy Birthday for Tuesday hope you have a lovely day. What sort of wallpaper would you recommend for hallways? I love wallpaper but would love something dark and beautiful xxxx

  3. Have you considered flooring on your hallway? It takes the texture thing to a whole new level and doesn’t mark easily either.

Hi Abigail! I’ve been wondering about my changing tastes and why and how they evolve.
From first opinions through to my 20s, i couldn’t stand gold in a room, and wanted everything to be chrome, pale and pretty minimal.
But in the last 5 years ive had to admit to myself that i’m increasingly drawn to darker colours, luxurious (invariably gold) items.
I find myself wondering if I’m a follower of (good) fashion? Or are my changing interests down to a refinement of tastes, because a bit of life experience has given me more confidence for experimentation and discovery?
I’ve got this theory that complexity is also an issue in our tastes as we age. In the same way most children enjoy predominantly sweeter foods, before their taste buds develop, I wonder if we initially experience an all white, minimal interior as less ‘challenging’ and therefore easier to appreciate when we’re younger, because a dark, sensuous, glamorous aesthetic is effectively a sensory overload?
Are we just not ready for it when were a bit younger?!

I just think when we are younger we have other priorities. I know in my 20′s I didn’t really give 2 hoots about interiors, I was way more into fashion and going out. Now you have to drag me out! Plus you just don’t have the same level of confidence, often times you’re renting and limited to what you can do (actually you’re not but its harder to make work) you have less income, a whole host of things I think. Plus as you say minimal white interiors are easy to pull off you can bang out that look in like 5 minutes I reckon.

  6. My tastes have certainly changed. I was forever looking to change things and was never quite happy. Now in my late forties and looking to retire early I have been purchasing the classics and furniture to stand the test of time with sumptuous and comfortable materials. Thank goodness for e-commerce and the choices we now have in wallpaper, accessories and art online for when I still get itchy feet.

  7. Hi Abigail
Isn’t this apartment just incredible….I have been so inspired by this gorgeous space (and recent posts by you!) that I have painted my entrance in my rental apartment a dark, moody grey…with my blue and white china and some silver pieces, it is looking amazing…wish I had done it months ago!!! Now I am on the hunt for some fabulous faux animal print…..Thanks for the constant flow of ideas…enjoy Maison and Paris!
    Jules

Thanks Jules so happy your entry looks fabulous and great to here that it looks amazing, especially being a rental. I was so inspired when I went to the US to see just how much effort people put into their apartments (majority being rentals) wallpapering, painting, filling them cool stuff so thanks again for sharing. x
